$2 Fixes For Your Life

$2 Fixes For Your Life

I won’t lie-sometimes I think “having it all” is a heap of bullsh!t. Work/Life balance just seems to get harder and harder rather than easier despite my being in the same routine for nearly two months. Wonder why that is? Even though I’m feeling the pain of a time crunch, I wanted to share some quick (and CHEAP) fixes for your life, and to some problems I’ve had recently. Enjoy.

1.) Kitty Litter- $2.00

$2.00 Cat Litter (bought on sale at Kroger)

I know what you’re thinking…random, right? And no, I’m not attempting to train Murray to go in a litter box to make my life easier. (Although SIDEBAR: My grandma did teach her late chihuahua ”Tiny” to go in a litter box and it worked out really well for her…) With the weather changing I now have the wild hair to “make over” our little deck, but unfortunately our old paint cans and dead plants are left out there from forgotten summer projects. I can re-pot the plants, but how do I get rid of the paint? Storing three gallon tins is not ideal, and I don’t need that much anyway.

CAT LITTER can be used to dry out old paint, which is great when your trash goes into a central chute instead of into a private trash bin. You don’t want to be that asshole that puts wet paint in the community trash bin. People have to load that into trucks, ya know.

sad paint cans

So you take the paint and put it into a smaller tupperware container, I set aside just enough for touch ups and mixed in the cat litter to the paint cans. I used up the entire bag  for about two cans that were half full, and just kept stirring until the paint became very thick. I left it out overnight and voila-the next day it was safe to bag and place in the trash chute.

Now my paint is stored in baby tupperware containers. So cute!

2.)  0.5% Hydrocortisone Cream-$1.95

Hydro-cortisone Cream. amazeballs

Depending upon where you live hydro-cortisone cream may be a tad more expensive, but it is worth it. Most use cortizone cream to put on a rash, eczema or any type of skin irritation. It works great for those ailments, but did you also know it can be used as a pimple cream? Forget pricey brands or “specially medicated” formulas, this sh!t is where it’s at. If you have ever gone to a dermatologist to get a “pimple shot” for overnight acne (a lot of actors/actresses do this for auditions as well as brides to get rid of pimples quickly) that shot is nearly 90% cortisone, an anti-inflammatory agent.

So pick (or don’t pick-people have strong opinions about picking pimples) and put the cortisone cream on top of the blemish. It will be SIGNIFICANTLY smaller in the morning. I’ve tried toothpaste, Clearasil, whatever…this stuff works the best and it is CHEAP.

3.) Teux Deux (the app!) $1.99

Many have asked how I juggle so many things at once. I’m still trying to get on the Google Calendar Train (but my lily pulitzer paper planner is just soooooo cute..), but I do use my phone and computer for this fantasmo application. It’s simple, so simple you wonder why you’d need to spend $2.00 when you could just use pen and paper, but it’s effective. Besides, if you’re like me…you lose paper like you lose panties pennies.

It’s a list for your life. http://www.teuxdeux.com

It’s just a to-do list, plain and simple, but it syncs between your computers and phone. I leave it open on my desktop while I’m working, and then when I open it at the grocery store it’s automatically updated. I have one for my blog/life, and one for each job and it helps keep me focused on what I need to get done first. Also-if I’m working and have a brilliant idea I can just type it on the list instead of having to hunt down something write with/on. There is also a helpful “someday” list where I put down all the things I’d like to accomplish one day but that aren’t time-sensitive, mostly projects around the house or friends I need to call. Sadly, this list keeps getting longer and longer, but at least I’ll never forget! I’ll  never forget because I wrote it doooooown.

I like it better than the “notes” application that comes on the iphone because it allows you to Mark through your completed tasks-which isn’t the most fun part of a to do list getting to actually cross things out?

Happy Friday!

  1. Since my skin still resmebles that of a newly pubescent teen at times, I love the hydrocortizone cream tip. I will remember that one:) Have a great weekend L-Bee!

    • Mine too, Greg. You’d think once you hit your mid-twenties you’d stop having skin problems…

      • I just keep hoping my acne will clear up before I start getting wrinkles. The signs are not looking good.

Thanks for the tips, I like the kitty litter trick a lot!

  2. I’ve really gotta get better at the ‘to-do’ list. Lately everything I need to do has been residing on sticky pad notes… when I say residing I really should say collecting dust. I need to technify my life. I’m sure I can work this into my budget for 2020.

    • I utilize sticky notes as well for stray thoughts I have that aren’t necessarily “to-do’s” but the app makes my life much easier.

  3. I did not know that about cat litter. I’ve used it to soak up old oil, but never thought about using it for old paint. Thanks for the tip!

  4. Had no idea about that use for cat litter. When we lived in Chicago our car used to be parked behind a speed bump and it would always get stuck in the winter. I would use cat litter under the tires to get traction. There all kids of uses for it outside the litter box.

  5. These are great tips! I’m definitely going to pick up some of that cream at the pharmacy next time I’m there (in Canada it runs closer to $3.99, but that’s still a good deal). I’m also definitely checking out that to do app. My life seems so much busier lately and I need a good to do app, my current one is being very temperamental so it might be time to make a switch.

  6. Kitty litter is also great for oil and other spills in your driveway or garage as well. Just don’t leave it there after it has soaked everything up. Because that would make you a redneck.

  7. Maybe this is too technical, but does it matter if it’s clumping kitty litter or non-clumping? I know you’re a dog person so might not know the difference, but thought it was worth asking!

  10. We had TONS of old paint at our rental house that we had to get rid of this summer. I had no idea about the kitty litter trick until my renter (who is a professional painter!) told me. So….that’s what you and a professional painter have in common. Not sure how to end this comment. Ta-Da! How’s that?

  11. You know, that’s an awesome tip on how to dry out paint cans. I also like the app recommendation. I’m always looking for ways to centralize my to-do lists (yes…I have multiple ones going and yes I do lose the paper ones from time to time).

Hope you have a great weekend!

  13. Great tip with the paint cans and the cat litter. Since I’m highly allergic to cats I likely would have never thought to do that since the product is not part of my life. We also can bring our paint cans to the re-use store or there is a place in our city where we can drop off cans of paint for others who need it. Cheers Mr.CBB
